Jessica Bucher

My name is Jessica Bucher (20). I am from Munich and I live in Maastricht since August 2009. I am a freshman at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, where I study European Studies. After my graduation from school I did an apprenticeship as “Patentanwaltsfachangestellte” for two years in an intellectual property law firm, which gives me a background in patent and trademark law. I am interested in foreign languages, travel and intercultural relations. In my professional future I would like to work in journalism, if possible as a foreign correspondent. Besides writing, I love to read and some people would even describe me as book-obsessed. But that does not mean that I spend most of the day in my room, as I also do sports like swimming and jogging and I like to dance.

If you are a EU citizen and you are registered in Maastricht, you are allowed to vote in the local elections. When the letter from the Municipality was in my mailbox, I was not sure whether I should really take part in the elections. After all, I do not know enough about Maastricht’s politics and representatives. But my curiosity rose, when a friend said: “I wonder if voting in Holland is different than in Germany.” I decided to go and I already found the first difference. In the Netherlands you can legitimize your identity with your diver’s license. In Germany, this does not count as a proof of identification. There you have to bring your ID card or passport. Now I will go and see if the actual act of voting also has some small differences to what I am used to at home…

interesting. A diving license works to identify? A little remnant from the Dutch Antilles? ;)
How was the act of voting, did you find any differences?

What a great spelling mistake. I am going to leave it like this now, for the fun of it. But of course it is supposed to be "driver's licence". And yes, I found another difference. In Germany you can only vote at one particular office in your neighbourhood, whereas here you can go to any stemlocal that you want.
