Too bad, but I really cannot find an English translation for the title. Since the French are involved, there is no information about this event provided in English. OK, there is this French-Dutch Academy and they organize each year a conference where French and Dutch Deans and Admins meet and discuss topics that are related to French-Dutch co-operation in higher education. This year, Universiteit Maastricht and Hogeschool Zuyd hosted the conference and last Tuesday and Friday the big event took place in the buildings of FEBA. Although I seem quite knowledgeable on this, I had never heard of this Academy before but since the conference was organized in our building, our Dean thought that it would be a good idea if I could discuss international co-operation in one session. Of course you say yes, in particular if they ask you in March for something that is due in June. But as the day approached I had to think quite hard what to present, in particular since our session was announced as a workshop. The last time I attended a workshop was during a jazz meeting in Maastricht when the trumpet player Eric Vloeimans taught us “hands-on” how to play a simple blues on the saxophone. But this was different stuff and I was a bit worried about the hands-on part of the workshop. Fortunately Julienne Erckens, our director of International Initiatives, was so kind as to join me and together we gave a talk about our work on double degrees. I must say that it went really well, not so much the presentation only, but the discussion (say the hands-on part) thereafter as well. There were many questions about strategic and operational issues. I really thought that our work is not so innovative in the flat world of higher education, but the large number of questions suggested otherwise. Let this be my eye-opener of last week.
