Invite your best friends, ask about 3000 students to volunteer, use your dance, drama and art academy to perform, let the president deliver an impressive performance as a singer and close the party with decent Chinese fireworks. These were the ingredients for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Chongqing University that I attended together with rector Gerard Mols, Louis Boon and Xiaoyan Zha...

Last Monday, I attended the start of a series of lectures about the economic crisis which is organized by Studium Generale. Prof Paul de Grauwe from Leuven started the lecture series. Paul de Grauwe is an interesting economist because he has always combined high quality research with “practical” policy advice and has always been prominent in the public debate. And he was for quite some time member...

As usual, the first Monday of September heralds the new academic year. Ok, last week Monday was actually the last Monday of August, but it was nevertheless the beginning of the first blocks. This was not our first stay on Bali. In 1988 we visited Bali for the first time and as could be expected in 2009, Bali has become more crowded and more touristic. But being half Indonesian myself and considering Aus...

At FEBA, both staff and students are concerned about how to turn our faculty and university into a real international community in which students from a large variety of nationalities are keen on working in multicultural teams. At this moment we have quite a few foreign students, but they seem to mingle only reluctantly and preferably with students from the same nationality. Although this is under...

Too bad, but I really cannot find an English translation for the title. Since the French are involved, there is no information about this event provided in English. OK, there is this French-Dutch Academy and they organize each year a conference where French and Dutch Deans and Admins meet and discuss topics that are related to French-Dutch co-operation in higher education. This year, Universi...

Sometimes you don’t have to sell Maastricht because Maastricht sells itself. Last Thursday Anthony Long from the University of Adelaide visited our university. Anthony was recruiting students in Germany and thought it was a good idea to drop by in Maastricht because Maastricht is quite popular among Adelaide students. The efforts of Ina Engelen (UCM) and myself to promote Maastricht extensively in...
