Vierendertig disputen die om de eer strijden en alweer een zege voor de dames van Linque. Woensdag 18 mei organiseerden twee Tragos-damesdisputen voor de vierde keer het Nos Ipse Beachvolleybaltoernooi op het dagstrand van Oost-Maarland.

“Can we be a financial and economic giant without being a political union?” asks Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, former Dutch foreign minister and former secretary-general of NATO, at the annual congress of financial study association FS Focus last Wednesday. “The answer is not less, but more integration.”

In het verleden was het niet altijd pais en vree in de wijk Brusselsepoort-Oost. Conflicten ontstonden wegens luide huisfeestjes van studenten en andere overlast, en de politie werd meer dan eens gebeld. Vorig jaar stelden buurtbewoners en studenten samen een protocol met leefregels op. Donderdag 12 mei organiseerde de buurt een gemoedelijk muziekfestival voor studenten en andere bewoners.

Saurus-damesgenootschap Linque gaat er met de eerste prijs vandoor

Last Saturday, the Faculty of Law hosted the finals of the International Client Consultation Competition (ICCC), in which teams of law students from all over the world tried to best one another during simulations of legal counsel. The pairs were confronted with actors playing prospective clients in need of legal services, and it was up to the students to achieve a good rapport with the clients and establish the legal issues in the cases. The theme: ethics.

“Happy Holi!” a girl exclaims while pelting another in the face with brightly coloured powder. The Indian student’s association ISA Maastricht welcomed the arrival of spring with a celebration of the traditional Hindu Holi festival this weekend. After enjoying an ample Indian lunch, association members and other attendees proceeded to cover one another in pigment powders in front of the University Library.

“Bestuursfuncties, daar leren studenten heel veel van, maar moet de maatschappij dat betalen?” vraagt Job Cohen. Afgelopen vrijdagmiddag ging de huidige fractievoorzitter van de PvdA in de Tweede Kamer en oud-rector van de UM met studenten in gesprek over het hoger onderwijs. Hoewel het persbericht van de universiteit sprak van een debat, was de middag op de website van de PvdA aangemerkt als campagne-evenement.

Last Wednesday, seven Maastricht University students sold out the Muziekgieterij, the city’s only venue for music that falls slightly outside the mainstream. Their group, The Serious Beans Project, has been doing well in the past year, and last week’s performance was no different. Observant sat down with them in a kitchen to have a chat.
