The New York Times has found a way to bring readers closer to the news. With their new app - NYT VR - you can see films in 360 degrees. By moving your mobile phone to the right, left, upwards or downwards, you can see what is happening in the film to the right, left, up and down. So you not only see how eleven-year-old Ukrainian Oleg and his friends climb ruins in their war-ravaged neighbourhood, but you can also turn around to admire the views.
The best results are obtained by watching the video clips through virtual-reality glasses. This does not need to be an expensive Oculus Rift. Google launched the Google Cardboard last June, which looks like an old-fashioned cardboard show-box, in which you can place your smartphone. Special lenses and a magnetic ring create a virtual-reality effect, but then for €15 instead of €260.
At the moment, four videos are available in the NYT VR app, but the newspaper has promised to create more soon.
