MAASTRICHT. ‘The next generation’ is the theme of this year’s Serious Request event, during which three popular radio DJs are locked up for six days in a small, temporary studio. Donations will go to children in conflict areas. “The university just had to be involved”, said Ellen Breevoort of the UM working group, who organised a torchlight walk in an effort to raise funds. The nine kilometre procession began last Tuesday at the university’s main office building at Minderbroedersberg, where students and staff assembled to receive a map and a torch, and set out towards Sint Pietersberg.

A fully equipped medical team and officers who stopped traffic to give the procession priority accompanied the group of roughly 110 participants. Passing by Cannerberg, they stopped at Chateau Neercanne for hot chocolate, Glühwein and shelter from the rain before heading out again with a new set of torches. Back at Minderbroedersberg, UM president Martin Paul received the participants and announced that UM would donate a further €7500 to Serious Request in addition to the money the participants paid to take part in the walk.

Janine de Jong from the master’s programme Physician–Clinical Investigator joined the event because it was an easy way to help a good cause, “and a fun idea to just take a walk with some friends.” Fellow student Melisa Borg agreed. She had shared the information about the event with her entire year, and pointed out the popularity of the route chosen for the walk. When asked about their favourite part, the group laughed and said in unison, “The Glühwein!”
