Sooothai so delicious Sooothai so delicious

Work like a slave, eat like a king

The precise balance between sweet and hot elements is key to Thai cuisine. And it’s not an easy tightrope to walk, but when it works, it comes together on the plate gloriously. Sooothai, right opposite the gate of the School of Business and Economics (SBE), manages to get this delicate balance just right. They cook some of the best Thai food I’ve had outside Thailand. Might have something to do with the fact that, as the website boasts, they fly in fresh ingredients every week from Bangkok. Sooothai’s understanding of balance even takes into consideration Western cooking methods, for instance by going easy on the spiciness.

The restaurant serves dishes ranging from typical seafood to meat specialties. Take the massaman beef curry I ordered online. This dish is wonderfully creamy with soft chunks of braised beef, coconut milk and potato slices. It was delivered very warm and neatly packed in aluminum foil with a sprinkling of crushed cashew nuts and fried onions. To accompany it I received delightfully fluffy jasmine rice with a relatively neutral taste to compensate for the colourful sauce with the meat.

The prices are okay, at an average of €9 for chicken and around €10.50 for seafood, although an extra €4.50 for four ridiculously small spring rolls does bump up the price somewhat. Students can order takeout of the dish of the day at a discounted rate of only €7.50.
