“For the love of my life”

“I actually wanted to send myself one, but I didn’t in the end.” Two students from University College Maastricht are snooping through the handwritten notes on one of the common room’s walls. The cards are attached to heart-shaped cookies – how appropriate on Monday, 15 February, the day after Valentine’s Day.
It is not the first time that the University College’s Charity Committee has baked Valentine’s cookies. Last year, about sixty came out of the oven. This year, the figure is more like ninety, estimates Charlotte Bücken, one of the organisers. There is one for her too, with the text: “For being an awesome boardmember and friend”. On top, in a coloured glaze, it says ‘Charlotte’.
Most of those who surprise each other are fellow students, but there is also the occasional declaration of love. “For the love of my life,” someone has written. He or she knows exactly how it works: the way to a (wo)man’s heart, is through the stomach.
Two weeks ago, the cookies could be ordered for €1.50 each. On Valentine’s Day, the Charity Committee made for the kitchen for a good cause, as the proceeds will go to the Deportivo Foundation for underprivileged children in Colombia.
