MAASTRICHT. “You meet new people and learn more about the university yourself, it’s a win-win situation”, that’s how the buddies of the International Student Ambassador Programme described their time showing new international students around. Last Wednesday, Maastricht University invited them to the Lumière to reward them for their endeavors.

“If you had to design an international city, it would be Maastricht”, said university president Martin Paul, who handed out the certificates this evening. In light thereof, he acknowledged how difficult it can be to move to a new country or city and thus, expressed his gratitude to twenty-seven motivated students from various faculties that volunteered to show 350 newbies their way around.

One after another cut their way through the cozy seats of the cinema hall to receive a certificate. The university president joked around and posed for photos with every ambassador- “smile, you can never have enough photos”. The casual gathering and laughter here and there contributed to an overall relaxed atmosphere.

After the official ceremony, the buddies were invited to stay for a “mix and mingle” and exchange their experiences over a glass of wine. Second-year European Studies student Theresa Kemeny really enjoyed being a buddy. “It is nice to help people that struggle with the same issues that I struggled with in my first year such has how to cope with the workload.” Both, Jessica Spaus and Ronja Vonderbank recall how “helpful” the buddy programme was to them when they first, lost and overwhelmed, arrived in Maastricht last year to study at FASoS. They therefore decided to help others to have an “easy start”. Vonderbank: “I wanted to show my six mini-buddies the most important things: where to buy a bike, how to borrow a book from the library and where to find Cato by Cato.”
