A good cause and music: “It’s magic”

MAASTRICHT. An intimate crowd gathers inside the Innbetween, which is decorated with warm lighting and a traditional Christmas tree, for the Unicef Charity Concert Thursday night. People chat and eat Mexican milk cake before the concert begins, which raises funds for children afflicted by the Hurricane Matthew in Haiti.

An array of talented artists will perform songs from different countries around the world for a crowd that came out to support the cause. “I like Unicef’s cause and music is always nice, so if you combine the two it is magic”, says FASoS student Tijs Adams.

The concert begins with a solo jazz performance by Gleb Baysha and transitions to French music performed by Diogo Andrade, with other performances by Marco Longhi and Samuel Agustin. Performing the song from Agustin’s home country of Colombia, Andrade plays the guitar while Agustin plays the clarinet for the song Adios Casablanca.

To end the concert, Calvin Hausmann, Yannick Rathmacher, and Malte Zandbergen perform an acoustic cover of Sweater Weather by the Neighbourhood. They have only begun performing together two weeks ago and had not yet come up with a name for their band when they were asked by a friend to perform for the event. “We said yes for the chance to play,” Hausmann says, before adding, “And it’s for the children.”

The 111.64 euros raised from the event, organized by the Unicef Student team, will go towards helping children in Haiti to receive the medical attention they need after the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew. The UNICEF team will continue to raise funds for the children who are at risk of malnutrition by hosting a bake sale at the Dominicanenkerk on December 19.
