Looking for a bargain

Looking for a bargain

The Turnzaal at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is filled with clothes, jewellery and shoes on Wednesday 20 March. This is the fifth edition of Shop&Go Maastricht, a flea market organised by Arts and Culture student Isabelle Cruse. “The first one was in my living room. We started with twenty people and now two thousand were invited to the event on Facebook. I had to turn potential sellers down. About a hundred applied, but the hall only fits fifty. I guess it fills a need.” She can think of at least one reason for the success of the event: “The flea markets in Maastricht are quite expensive. For instance, the one in the MECC has a four-euro entrance fee, and if you want to be a seller it costs 25 euros. This one is for free. Plus, students are always looking for a bargain. I know I am.”

It’s the end of the afternoon and some sellers are already packing up; their tables are empty. “It was packed when we started at 11.30”, says Cruse. “In addition to students, some staff members also came by. The faculty has been really helpful; they let me have the Turnzaal and mentioned the event in their newsletter.” The only people missing were men, according to one seller. A lot of his merchandise (mainly men's clothes) is left over. “There were a few; mostly boyfriends who had been dragged along.” Cruse agrees. “We’ll work on that.”

Sellers who don’t want to take their unsold clothes back home can donate them to the Maastricht Rotaract Club, which will give them to charity. Cruse is busy giving people their five-euro deposits back after they have cleaned their stalls. She plans to hold the next Shop&Go outside. “I don’t know where yet. I asked the town if I could do it in the park, but apparently that’s only allowed on Queen’s Day.”
