MAASTRICHT. One play, four separate scenes, the connecting theme being love and how people deal with it. That is Confusions, written by Alan Ayckbourn, played on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 January by the Maastricht PhD Academy, directed by John Ramaekers.
De PhD Academy organises various activities for PhD students at Maastricht University, from lectures to films, and this time a play. Members and actors Eveline Velthuijsen and Dorijn Hertroijs, both PhD students at the Department of Health Services Research, had already experienced PhD Improv, where (mainly) PhD students come together to do improvisation drama every Thursday. “You can just walk in. We have also done a one-day play in the past, but this time we wanted to do a stage play with a script, in order to develop ourselves more,” says Velthuijsen.
“Confusions is a varied piece, with lots of roles, which is great because we are a group of sixteen,” says Hertroijs. “It is serious, but it also has a lot of dark British humour.” The four scenes are played in various settings, but some characters from one part can also be seen in another part.
Hertroijs plays a woman who visits her neighbour. “She hasn't seen her for some time, is worried, and goes to check things out. During the conversation, we learn more about the neighbour's marriage, but also about my marriage and my husband. To put it mildly, there is room for improvement.” Velthuijsen’s scene is set in a restaurant. “Two couples go out to dinner together. The men know each other; one works for the other. What should have been a romantic evening for both couples, ends in a row.”
