FASoS: proposal submitted and immediately brushed aside

MAASTRICHT. Would it not be a good idea if student council members were to receive ECTS credits for their work? This idea was proposed by some of the student members during the last council meeting at the Faculty of Arts and Culture. This was not for their own benefit, but to make council membership more attractive in the future, they said. After all, students also get credits for their work placements. Just like they do during their work placements, student members in the council gain work experience.

“You do this kind of work because you feel it is important,” replied other students in the fraction. “We are already paid, which is an ‘incentive’.” There was also little enthusiasm for the plan among staff members and faculty board. “There are things that you do out of idealism, for the community.” An observation that was fully endorsed, by the way, by those who submitted the plan.

There was also criticism for the idea that every student, upon completion of their term, would make an assignment, reflecting on their council work and so earn ECTS credits. That would not only increase the work pressure of staff, but would also bring about the situation that staff members who were in the council on an equal footing with the students would then suddenly have to assess their work.

With that, the proposal was rejected.
