Well-being Week: Yoga in between classes

Well-being Week: Yoga in between classes

MAASTRICHT. Student life involves a lot of changes: a university study, living by yourself, and new friends. During the Well-being Week by University College Maastricht (UCM), the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) and the Student Service Centre (SSC), students will get tips to become healthier and more resilient.

“Psychological counsellors see many students and I suspect that not everyone who needs help, manages to reach the right person,” says Tessa Vanheeswijck, student counsellor at UCM. She is organising the Well-being Week together with students and employees of UCM, FPN, and SSC with the aim of preventing health problems and to inform students about where to turn with physical or mental complaints.

The initiative stems from Mental Health Week - where psychological well-being was the focal point – which was organised by UCM student association Universalis in January. “We would like to extend this concept in the direction of both psychological and physical well-being.” The Well-being Week is a pilot project for students from FPN and UCM. If the evaluation shows that it was successful, the organisation hopes to expand the project to include more faculties next year.

Various information sessions, workshops and lectures will take place, both in Randwyck and in the city centre. During the day, there will be info stands and short workshops - such as sports, mindfulness, yoga, and creativity workshops - which students can attend in between lessons. In the evening, there will be lectures about studying, nutrition, creativity, and even substance abuse. Even Consent Matters Maastricht, the action group against sexual harassment, will give a lecture. In addition to lecturers and advisers from UCM, FPN, UM Sports and the SSC, student associations Universalis and Lunatik are also participating. Time Out! (from PodiumT), the final activity of the week and “the cherry on the cake,” is an interactive theatre performance that centres on stress, burnout and depression. This will be accessible to all employees and students of the university.

The Well-being Week is from 30 October to 3 November at UCM, FPN, and in SBE's large auditorium. More information about the event can be found on:
