The Canadian bucket list

‘Fear is temporary, regret is forever.’ With that cheesy phrase in mind I decided to go out wearing only leggings, no skirt. Although I have never quite understood that trend – it just looks like you’ve forgotten something – I decided that I should try it while I still could. Because it’s normal here, while in the Netherlands, everybody would indeed stare at you like you have forgotten something.

And that was the beginning of the Canadian bucket list. With only one day left in Kingston (exams are over, students are fleeing this town and I’ll be starting travelling) and one month left in Canada, it’s time to do all the things you have to do when you’re in Canada, or things that you simply can’t do at home. I did do a lot of indispensable Canadian things, like seeing a beaver, watching (ice)hockey matches, risking hypothermia while camping in the winter, but there are still things I have to do before I leave.

Eating pizza from Ontario’s pride chain ‘pizza pizza’, apparently. Or going to Tumbleweed Tuesday, a country music night at one of the bars. And I can’t leave Canada without having seen a moose. So we planned a little moose hunt trip to spot one for next week. But now I heard that the national park we wanted to go to is flooded, while the lakes are still frozen (yeah, I am also wondering how that is even possible). That doesn't really help when you want to go camping and canoeing, but it won’t hold us back. We shall not leave this country without seeing one.

And on the last day in Kingston, we will organise a Canadian food fest. To enjoy Canada’s delicacies one last time, or to make sure we’ve tried them at least once. Lots of food - pizza, maple syrup pancakes, sweet potato fries, poutine and the list goes on - and no single vegetable.

It may not be such a bad idea to leave after all.
