Record number of visitors at open day

MAASTRICHT. The bachelor’s open day last Saturday saw more visitors than ever, with at least 3,600 school students – a new record – finding their way to Maastricht University. That figure was around 3,100 in November 2015 and 2016. Between them the visitors managed to drink some 1,540 litres of coffee and 345 litres of tea.

“In total there were around 9,000 visitors, including students and their companions”, says events manager Julienne Erckens. Exact numbers are hard to give: “Our estimate is based on the advance registrations.” For the first time, visitors could register via a special UM app. “But there were some problems with the check-in function. Due to the crowd, attendance at the sessions couldn’t always be counted by hand.”
The enthusiasm, according to Erckens, has to do with the early registration deadline for some UM study programmes: 15 January for programmes with a numerus fixus (a restricted number of places), such as Medicine, Psychology and International Business. There are also more high school students from group 4 than there used to be. “They’re starting to look around earlier.” Finally, Erckens points to the current peak in the number of 18-year-olds in the Netherlands. “That will continue for the coming two years, before the number goes down again.”
Seventy percent of the visitors were Dutch – half of whom were from Limburg and over one third from Brabant – following by 12 percent Germans and 6 percent Belgians. Medicine was a particular favourite, but International Business, Economics & Business Economics, Biomedical Sciences, Psychology and European Law School were also popular.
Special attention was again paid to parents in the form of information sessions and parent cafes. Parent information officer Hermien Miltenburg gave a presentation on the role of parents in their child’s choice of study programme (see article).
And apart from a few hitches here and there, the new app passed the baptism of fire; it was downloaded 2,400 times and used to look up information such as which room a session was to be held in and how to get from one faculty to another.
The next bachelor’s open day is scheduled for Saturday 24 February 2018. The master’s open day will be on Saturday 24 March 2018.
