MAASTRICHT. No lighting on your bike? Very dangerous, say Maastricht Bereikbaar and Regionaal Orgaan Verkeersveiligheid Limburg (ROVL). Today, Thursday the 30th of November, they start the bicycle lighting campaign ‘Light it up!’.
A - clearly visible - promotional team will inform cyclists about bicycle lighting on and around the Market between 17.00 and 21.00 o’clock. The police will also make an appearance during the campaign as they will tell cyclists about the rules regarding bicycle lighting and the level of the fines you can get for cycling without lighting. Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) will perform checks and, if necessary, repairs together with StudentBikeMaastricht. All this is done to reduce the number of traffic casualties: research shows that the chances of being in an accident will decrease with 20 per cent when you have proper bicycle lighting.
