British researchers and students keep the same rights after Brexit

EUROPE. It looks as if British students and researchers - for the time being - may continue to participate in European programmes such as Erasmus+ and Horizon2020 after the Brexit.

For eighteen months, ever since it became clear that the United Kingdom was going to leave the European Union, British students and researchers have been living in uncertainty: what is going to happen when Brexit becomes a fact? They feared to be excluded from the Erasmus+ exchange programme and from European research grants and subsidies.

This now seems to be less disastrous, if we are to believe the tentative agreement reached between the EU and the UK. A passage has been included in the document regarding the equal treatment of students. This implies that they will receive the same rights as students from EU countries, including health care, social benefits and (higher) education.

As the British will uphold agreements such as free movement of people until 2020, chances are that they will continue to participate in and contribute towards Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020, says Andrea Bos from Neth-ER, the outpost of Dutch education and research in Brussels.

At the same time, she feels that there is still a lot of uncertainty, because agreements will only be definite when negotiations have been completed and approved. “Negotiations on many specific issues still have to be held. What will happen, for example, with tuition fees for foreign students; this is completely unclear at the moment. The same applies to the situation after 2020.”
