Meet Maastricht: from vlaai to Bonnefanten Museum

MAASTRICHT. Discovering the mysteries of Maastricht – those places off the beaten tourist track – learning how to bake a vlaai at the Bisschopsmolen or exploring the  neighbouring  caves. Every week, Meet Maastricht organizes an activity for foreign students and expats to discover the local culture. This weekend – Friday 24 until Sunday 26 – all activities will take place once more to conclude the academic year at the Meet Maastricht Festival.

Meet Maastricht was set up two years ago by Arts and Heritage alumna Justyna Kamińska. What then started as a pilot project has now grown into a foundation with four team members organising weekly activities. “Justyna noticed that most cultural activities were not focused on the international student community,” says Maria Vatista, one of the team members. “They were either too expensive, only in Dutch or too much information-based. We always try to make our activities interactive, to get the cultural dialogue going. They are always in English and either free of charge or low in price.”

The activities also serve a social goal. “Many participants come back every week to meet each other and new people. I started as a participant and it has made me feel more welcome to the city. According to a small survey Justyna held before she started, 90 per cent of the students wanted to learn more about Maastricht but didn’t actually get around to doing it.”

In addition to the activities, the Festival will also include an opening party, a museum night at the Bonnefanten Museum and a dance party.
