MAASTRICHT. A slimmed-down revival of the Maastricht Cultural Capital 2018 initiative seems to be less and less likely. Three weeks ago, when it was announced that Leeuwarden was the winning city, project leaders Guido Wevers and Huub Smeets alluded to a plan B, for which twenty of the original eighty million would be made available. The initiative was warmly welcomed by many.
Meanwhile, it has become clear that various political parties in the Provincial States have no faith in a plan B. The meeting on a new start, scheduled for this week, has also been cancelled. In addition, the organising foundation VIA 2018 has announced through its chairman Huub Smeets that it will cease to exist as of 1 January 2014.
A reaction from the Maastricht City Council to this matter is still pending. 8 October the council will talk about this matter.
