MAASTRICHT. The city of Maastricht plays a greater role than ever before in the Inkom programme for 2019. For example, the first-year students can participate in a city walk (led by a guide from the tourist information centre), they will eat in Maastricht restaurants and during the event ‘Maastricht is Yours’ they can take part in activities in the city, such as a boat trip or guided tour of the caves.
“After all, Inkom is also meant to help you get to know Maastricht better,” says Emma de Groot, chairperson of the Inkom Working Group. “A city walk, for example, is an easy way to see the highlights. Also, Maastricht has so many fun restaurants. It would be a shame not to do something with that.” On Tuesday evening, the Inkom groups will eat at various restaurants in the city for a fixed amount. “We have allocated them to groups beforehand. We wanted to have a shared moment when everyone would eat at the beginning of the week, because you often get to know each other better during such a meal.”
There are a few other adaptations to the programme. Those who don't want to or can't attend the ‘cantus’ (students under the age of 18 must skip the beer fest) cannot only see a film but also go to the roller skate disco. On Tuesday afternoon, there is a ‘Dutch Moment’ at the Tapijn barracks, where students can become acquainted with typically Dutch phenomena. There is a cycling track, for example.
Also at the Tapijn barracks on the same day is ‘Dare 2B Aware’. “Many students experience pressure of work and stress. These are topics that we want to put up for discussion in a light-hearted way, in the form of a quiz or a game,” says De Groot. “There will be people from various organisations present, including the student psychologists.”
To conclude on Friday - before the great final Mecc party - there will be an open-air cinema in the park, where the students can also get their meals from any of the food trucks present.
The artists will have a Maastricht touch to them. Local heroes, DJs Lucas and Steve, will be at the Heineken Night in Mecc on Friday, and on Monday the Shakin DJs will take to the stage on the Markt during the opening session. “We are also bringing a band to the MECC; Band with Benefits on Friday,” says De Groot. “We are also proud that Kriss Kross Amsterdam is coming to the Mecc on Tuesday.”
