MAASTRICHT. No European Song Contest in Maastricht next year - that will be celebrated in Rotterdam – but we will have the celebrations for King Willem-Alexander’s birthday together with his family. On King’s day, 27 April 2020, the city will be awash with orange. “It is an absolute honour that the King will come to our city to celebrate King's Day next year,” mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake rejoiced in a press release. She refers to Maastricht as the oldest city in the Netherlands with “one of the youngest and most international populations. Those two souls of the city will constitute the basis of the programme.”
Since Willem-Alexander ascended the throne, King's Day has been celebrated on his birthday: 27 April. The guest city is always his personal choice. Last year, it was Amersfoort, the year before that it was Groningen. King's Day is traditionally celebrated with a variety of events, including unregulated street markets and festivals.
