University Council student members saddled with extra work

MAASTRICHT. Student members of the University Council often have to do an extra study assignment, because they miss out on part of the education programme due to their council or committee duties. During a University Council meeting last Wednesday, they asked rector Rianne Letschert whether a solution could be found for this. The rector promised to take a closer look at the problem.

Compulsory attendance applies to many study programmes at Maastricht University. A student may miss one tutorial at the most, but sometimes not even that.  Anyone who cannot attend, even with good reason, can only pass the block concerned by doing an extra assignment. The same applies to compulsory lectures and practicals. The student members of the University Council feel that this is a little harsh when the reason for your absence is committee work.

This same problem, by the way, is also experienced at the Faculty of Psychology and Neurosciences. Those student members there preferred education to the last faculty council meeting. “While their presence here is also very important,” said chairman Michael Capalbo, who raised the matter with the Faculty Board. The latter will look into whether the students can transfer to another group.
