MAASTRICHT. The real estate management of student services bureau Jules, which was declared bankrupt in December, is to be taken over by GeWOON in Geulle, curator Joep Tummers from Paulussen Advocaten announced. It is not really a new start, because GeWOON will not be offering the other Jules services, such as the language courses and the moving service.
More than ten years ago, Karin van der Ven, alumna from Maastricht University, set up Jules in order to help foreign students get on their way. Managing student accommodation was added to the services along the way. But the business earned a bad name for itself, especially on social media. Jules apparently paid back deposits in part, or not at all. The bureau was also accused of poor maintenance. Eventually bankruptcy was unavoidable. Tummers said that in the end “very few” students came to him with outstanding claims (such as deposits that still needed to be repaid).
