MAASTRICHT. Student sports association Saurus is (partially) open. Single-person boats (skiffs) are permitted in the water again. The rowers must adhere to a strict corona protocol. With this, Saurus is the first Maastricht student association to get going again. It is expected that other associations will follow soon.
Saurus, in co-operation with the ‘Maastrichtsche Watersport Club’, submitted a protocol with safety measures to the city council last week. The crisis management team for the university also looked at it. Both bodies approved the measures that must guarantee distance and hygiene.
“We set up a land training plan for our competitive rowers, so there was a lot of running and cycling lately,” says chairperson Rosalie Bovy. “We also distributed our rowing machines to be used at home, but we are glad to be able to row in the water again.”
In the meantime, UM Sports and other student associations are working hard to draw up protocols for other outdoor activities – and possibly swimming as well, the only indoor sport for which the cabinet has made an exception. It is expected that more sports will be able to resume (in a limited way) next week.
