MAASTRICHT. From tomorrow, Thursday 15 October, onwards, all staff and students will have to wear a face mask in the UM buildings. Under the motto: while walking or standing, the face mask stays on, when you sit down, it can be taken off.
It is one of the measures taken by the Executive Board after Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced a partial lockdown on Tuesday evening. For example, the bars and restaurants will close, alcohol sales are prohibited after 8 p.m. and a maximum of thirty people are allowed to gather in public spaces. These rules apply for a minimum of four weeks.
Following the university face mask measure is not optional. From next Monday, October 19, UM will “strictly monitor” whether it is being fulfilled, according to the latest update on corona. It is not yet clear which sanctions will follow if someone refuses to set one up. UM is going to look into that, says spokesman Fons Elbersen.
The education sector is exempt from most of the measures, which is why tutorial groups, practicals and lectures at UM will continue 'as usual': on campus if possible, online if necessary. Always with due observance of all safety measures. The scheduled exams - education is exempt from the thirty-person norm - are not hindered either, the test week will continue as planned. This includes the exams with four hundred students (normally 1800) in the Mecc.
PhD ceremonies, inaugural lectures and graduation meetings on location can also still take place, but the number of visitors is limited to a maximum of thirty people, of course 1.5 meters apart. “PhD defenses that have already been planned cannot be postponed, the university wants to prevent building up a reservoir in 2021,” said spokesman Fons Elbersen.
Working from home remains the rule, as it already was. Meetings - and this is new - with five or more people must be held digitally. If meetings are held in the UM buildings, this is possible with a maximum of four people.
With regard to UM Sport: sports can continue as long as the 1.5-meters distance is guaranteed and the group is no larger than four people, both inside and outside. Group lessons and team sports with more people will be canceled. Competitions have already been canceled. UM Sport will announce which activities will continue shortly.
