MAASTRICHT. The post of vice rector of education will not be filled again, says rector Rianne Letschert. Vice rector Harm Hospers retired on 1 January 2021.
In February 2015, Hospers added the task of vice rector of education to his position as director of the EDLAB. This was a completely new position, created by the then rector Luc Soete, who felt that he couldn’t manage being responsible for education by himself.
Current rector Rianne Letschert was an heir to that situation. The role of Harm Hospers as vice rector was “crucial”, she says, among others in the preparation of the Institutional Audit for quality assurance (where does the quality of education at the UM stand) and the extension of Certificate of Quality in Internationalisation (CeQuInt). Both assessments were carried out at the end of 2018 on behalf of NVAO, education quality assurance agency in the Netherlands and Belgium. The UM received a lot of praise, both for the quality of education, and for internationalisation.
Previous positions that Hospers held include dean of University College Maastricht and dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. He felt very strongly about education, states the press release that reported his retirement. Averse to publicity, he mainly worked behind the scenes, the message says.
From now on, Letschert will personally deal with all education dossiers. There will be no new vice rector, as there is no need at the moment, she said when asked.
