Six months jail for threatening students

MAASTRICHT. A man was sentenced to six months imprisonment in Maastricht for threatening two female members of the student association KoKo. He must also pay them compensation.

According to the court, the man found a photograph album of the student association, which also contained telephone numbers and addresses. He sent explicit text messages in which he threatened to rape and mutilate the two students if they refused to sleep with him. He put photographs of weapons in their letterboxes. He also threatened to hurt their friends.

Koko informed student liaison officer Paul Vermin. "There were two reports that showed a lot of similarities. Besides, the threats were serious. We immediately involved the criminal investigation department. This resulted in a swift arrest."

The judge sentenced the man to one year imprisonment, six months of which was probational. The two victims were awarded compensation: one more than eight hundred euro, the other 750 euro.

Student association KoKo preferred not to comment on the verdict.
