Behind the Status
Already a big success in Groningen, now they want to bring it to the south! It’s all about bringing people together who love to make music and who like to listen and see people playing beautiful songs! The only thing that is needed is a big living room or other place! Read the document for more information and I really hope somebody can help me bring this beautiful thing to Maastricht!
“Open Door Sessions are living room concerts”, says the medical student Kirsten Kramer (20), who posted the above message on the Sharing is Caring Facebook page. “The idea is for people to open up their living room for a singer-songwriter to perform for an audience. People come together, enjoy the music and just have a great night.”
The idea of Open Door Sessions was born in Groningen, where it is already a success. “A friend of mine performed in one of the sessions there. His best friend organises it and they’re both enthusiastic. Lots of people have been going to see the performances in Groningen. One of the previous sessions was even held in a church. I think Maastricht is the perfect city to launch Open Door Sessions because it has a cultural vibe.”
One comment on her Facebook post points out that the concept resembles Stukafest. “That’s true, but Open Door Sessions is smaller and more intimate. There’s only one performance per night and it can be held monthly. Also, it’s non-profit, so we don’t ask an entrance fee and the musicians play voluntarily. All we need is a living room, music and an audience.”
Open Door Sessions hasn’t yet kicked off in Maastricht. “Next week, the guys who organise the nights in Groningen will come down to discuss how we can get the event going. A girl from my programme has already offered her living room, so we only need some music now and people to watch.” Kramer admits that initiating an event like this can be difficult. “But we’ll just start with a small group of friends and hopefully it will grow into something as big as in Groningen.”
