Wednesday, 11:20am: entering the garden, soft music and chatting groups of people are inviting to join in, relax and enjoy the sun. All still seem to be a bit tired from the night before. Ien van der Werf, 22, from Chile, soon studying at SBE, enjoys the event. “I am here to get some advise on things like how to open a Dutch bank account, find a job, a bike, a nice room”. He is sitting with four international students from Australia, Belgium, France and Germany. The five guys met at the Stayokay, the local Hostel. “We are looking forward to the upcoming days. So far it’s been a lot of fun!” Matthew Nelson, 20, from Sydney has only slept one and a half hours, is jetlagged and hung over, but still did not get enough – at I’m International he wants to find out where the international people party.
Upstairs, 11.40am: the Statenzaal fills with about 120 freshmen who want to learn more about student life in Maastricht. Representatives of Saurus, MSV Pulse, ESN and Jules & You give a short presentation – the final one causes most laughter in the group: some students are already wearing caps with their logo.
Outside, the queue for the free brunch still has not gotten any shorter. But as van der Werf rightfully pointed out – “It is for free, we should not complain”.
