MAASTRICHT. For the second time in a row, Maastricht University has taken sixth place in the Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 ranking. Earlier this year, the UM already captured a place in the top hundred (98) of the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2013-2014.
THE looks at aspects such as research (scale, reputation), citations (worldwide influence of research), education (including student-staff ratio), internationalisation (diversity on campus and how much each university’s academics collaborate with international colleagues on research projects), and industry outcome (a university’s ability to reinforce industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy). The UM scores especially well on this last point and on internationalisation.
First place goes to the Korean Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech). Second place is for the Swiss École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Then follow another three Asian universities. The UM is allowed to participate in this category for another twelve years, until the UM reaches its fiftieth anniversary in 2026.
Maastricht University can also be found in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014. Psychology is in 35th place, two places up from 2013. Medicine, Law, Economics & Econometrics and Accounting & Finance rank among the top 100.
