MAASTRICHT. The bill has been submitted, but has not been passed yet. If the plan by the ministers Opstelten (Safety and Justice) and Blok (Housing and Public Service) goes through, tenants will no longer have to pay administration fees for rooms or apartments when an agency acts for both tenant and landlord.
Until now, students who made use of a letting agency often had to pay a month’s rent as administration fees. If the bill is passed, only the landlord will have to pay. This will have huge consequences for smaller agencies, Marion Hendriks from Maastricht Housing expects. “This will separate the men from the boys. They will have to find other ways to generate income.” Not much will change for Maastricht Housing itself; they only charge a registration fee. “Maybe we will be busier if landlords are required to pay more to commercial agencies to compensate for the loss of income.”
