Over a hundred women and a few brave men hear the loudspeakers say “Hey, sexy lady!”, while they dance at the ‘Zumba Party Hearty’ in Randwyck Sports Centre on Thursday evening. The theme of this special Zumba lesson (Zumba is a fitness programme based on Latin American dance) is cardiovascular diseases. Red balloons hang near the entrance and there are heart-shaped sweets on the tables. The participants were asked to wear something red, to mark the Dress Red Day, last Saturday, to create greater awareness of cardiovascular diseases in women. There is also a large collection box for donations to support RESCAR (providing resuscitation courses and cardiovascular research).
“At the department of cardiology, we have had the Walk with your doctor project, a charity walk for patients with a heart condition, for three years now,” says Zumba teacher and PhD student Sandra van Wijk. “Then I thought: why don’t we do Zumba with your doctor.” For a small fee, non-Sports Card holders were also allowed to take part. “We collected 105 euros. More would have been nicer, of course, but one cannot expect students to give ten euros each.”
