MAASTRICHT. Aurelia Streit, of the Student and Society Initiative (SSI), has won the Student Award 2015 for her work coordinating the Refugee Project Maastricht. The aim of the project is to bring students and refugees from the Maastricht asylum centre together to interact and socialise, and give the refugees a break from their day-to-day wait for news about their family or asylum application. The SSI set up the project together with the COA (the Dutch agency for the shelter of asylum seekers) and the ecumenical student chaplaincy InnBetween.
According to the jury, “Streit has played a key role in setting up sub-committees for the Refugee Project Maastricht, so that refugees and students and citizens can share stories, learn from each other and even become friends.” She was unable to accept the award in person at the Opening of the Academic Year ceremony as she is on exchange in Hong Kong.
Two other nominees received an honourable mention from the jury: UAEM-Maastricht, an organisation dedicated to promoting the affordability and global availability of medicines, and The Foodbank Maastricht, which aims to make people aware of the causes of food wastage and what they can do about it.
