Last Saturday was the big day: Nancy Bocken and Hidde-Jan Lemstra, both alumni of the School of Business and Economics, got married. On Friday they hosted drinks at the Kruithuis. “We got the idea for a pre-wedding drink at the wedding of a friend”, says Lemstra. “The guests can get to know each other and it’s a good way to relax for the bride and groom.” He immediately thought of the Kruithuis as a location. “When we were studying here (they both started in 2001 –Ed.) it was a very active bar. We had quite a few drinks there.” So he called the university catering services. “And they said no”, Lemstra laughs. “They don’t do private events. Luckily Leann Poeth, the SBE alumni officer, was able to help us.”
Lemstra and Bocken met at the university when they were taking a course together. “We went on a few dates, but then we each went our own ways. Until a few years later, when we literally bumped into each other at the Kruisherenhotel.” The couple moved to Great Britain in 2008, where Bocken works at the University of Cambridge (where she obtained her PhD) and Lemstra started his own company after working for Shell for a couple of years.
Lemstra is excited about the wedding. “It’s about time. We got engaged in August 2011. At some point you’re done planning.” The couple will have to wait a few more months for their honeymoon. “Nancy’s in the middle of teaching season at Cambridge. We’ll go to the Caribbean in January.”
