Traditionally, on the last weekend of August, the largest open-air restaurant in the world is created in Maastricht. For the 28th time, restaurants and bars from in and around Maastricht will set up their elaborate booths and bars on the Vrijthof and invite anyone to come and taste their finest foods and drinks.
This historical event draws many representatives of Maastricht’s high society to the city centre to taste some delicious food at any of the more than forty stands set up by Maastricht’s finest and most exquisite restaurants. Of course, good food has its price, but to ensure a great time for every budget, every booth is offering at least one snack for as little as two 'lappen'. These Preuvenemint lappen constitute the official currency for this event, available from four different locations on the square; and as is the case every year, all proceeds will go to charity. One lap costs 1.80 euros. But even without spending a single cent, this gezellig event is worth a visit, even if it is just to watch the people while listening to live music.
