What: Maastricht aan Tafel
When: Monday 1–Sunday 7 February
Where: restaurants across the city centre
Admission: €25.20 for a three-course meal
Despite the fact that Maastricht has the highest restaurant density of all Dutch cities, you may not have been able to explore its culinary diversity yet, being part of the generally poor student population. Now is the time to change this. During Maastricht aan Tafel, 43 restaurants across the city centre offer three-course meals for €25.20. The participating restaurants are flagged with a recognisable window sticker. The event is dedicated to Extraordinary Ones, an NGO that attempts to provide children worldwide with meals at their schools. The 20 cents of the symbolic restaurant price not only ensures that these children are fed, but also gives them an incentive to actually attend school.
The week-long programme is complemented by various possibilities to gain new culinary experiences, for instance by joining a baking workshop for the characteristic Limburgse vlaai, a culinary tour across Maastricht or a high tea in the Museum aan het Vrijthof. An exhibition in Centre Céramique explores the bars and cafes of Maastricht and their subcultures across history. And a special beer is brewed for the occasion, based on a recipe from 1710.
