“So what?” What would your answer to this question be? “I don’t know.” Maybe: “What do you mean?” Or: “Yes, what about it?” Belgian performer Joost Vandecasteele explores the different answers to this question in his show Otaku. In his search for the right response, he uses predictions, graphs, different opinions and perspectives, known facts and – every once in a while – a joke. All of this he brings together in what is called a powerpoint performance. His play, a mix of theatre and comedy, pays special attention to idea of losing our freedom and ‘the recapture of the future’.
Besides being comedian and theatre performer, Vandecasteele is also an author. He writes for magazines such as De Revisor, De Brakke Hond and Deus Ex Machina, and one of his short stories received the Dutch Brandende Pen award in 2007. And there is more to come: his book Hoe de wereld perfect functioneert zonder mij (‘How the world functions perfectly without me’) has been nominated for the Academica Debutantenprijs 2010. Though of Belgian origin, his performance is in English. Get a taste of his show by searching for the prologue of Otaku on YouTube.
