A former law student of Maastricht University and former columnist for Observant is to receive compensation from GeenStijl. GeenStijl is a Dutch website where the news and light-hearted subjects are discussed. They have a reputation for their use of a direct, often rude and offensive tone.
The court in Amsterdam has ruled that GeenStijl should pay compensation after posting a short film in which the student was interviewed while quite drunk last summer. Visitors left lots of reactions, ranging from “stupid drunken whore” to “this kind of sloshed pigs”. Her name and other personal data had been added to the posting.
The student got herself a lawyer after she had approached GeenStijl several times with the request to remove the video, all to no avail. She demanded 15 thousand Euros as an advance on the damages, but the court judged that this demand was too high. In a new legal procedure (the so-called "assessed damages procedure") the exact level of compensation will be established.
