Where will students go and have their parties now, since The Highlander has been closed? This question was put before mayor Onno Hoes by political parties D66, PvdA and Groen Links (Democrats 66, Labour Party and Green Left). The Highlander pub was shut down last week for a period of six months, after drugs had been found on the premises. And rightly so, according to the council members, but they are worried about possible house parties being organised by the students.
“Of course we don’t know, but we suspect that there will be more and bigger house parties,” says Antoine van Lune (Labour Party). “That will increase the pressure on the city and result in a lot of complaints. We hope that the mayor, together with the police and the university, can come up with a plan to keep these parties within bounds. We shouldn’t come up with ad-hoc solutions after something has happened, but think of a smart and sound approach beforehand.”
Mayor Hoes will answer the questions in a letter as soon as possible. Should the mayor not have a plan of action for potential house parties, the council members will urge that he come up with one.
