Top 3% regulation scrapped

The regulation that meant that the best 3 per cent of UM students had their lecture fees reimbursed, has been abolished. The Executive Board wants to spend the money differently.

The Top 3 per cent regulation will be cancelled as of the next academic year. Students who started this year, including those from February 2011, will still qualify. The option of scrapping the regulation with immediate effect, was considered, but the Executive Board expected that this would cause damage to the university’s reputation. The option of spreading the abolishment over four years, however, would lead to higher costs. In 2010, 700,000 Euros was paid out.

The reasons were strictly financial, rector Mols said to the university council last week. The money comes from the fund that has been reserved for grants. In light of the threatening cuts, the university would prefer to spend the money on recruiting talented but poor students.
