Monthly meetings where students, staff and alumni from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences can discuss subjects that they have chosen, take workshops and/or listen to lectures. This is a proposal put forward by the student representatives. With this initiative they hope to strengthen the bond between the students from the various FaSoS programmes, the present and former staff and the alumni and thus to create a close-knit FaSoS community. The initiators expect that this will broaden the students’ scientific knowledge, increase their career perspectives through the experience of former students, expand the number of contact hours (currently a national discussion) and enhance the relationship with the UM and the Netherlands (for foreign students).
The reaction from the faculty board in last week's council meeting was very positive. “Excellent initiative,” they said. “This could become a kind of Studium Generale for FaSoS,” dean Rein de Wilde reckoned. “Let's try it out for six months and then evaluate. Also make sure that this project does not depend entirely on the enthusiasm of two students. Make it sustainable,” board member Jo Wachelder added.
A poll will be held on Facebook in the third week of January to determine the subject for the first meeting. A total of three meetings have been planned before the summer break. The last will be the closing of the year.
