The fact that René Verspeek, director of Student Services (SSC), must leave, has to do with dissatisfaction about his performance and the Executive Board's idea that directors should change jobs from time to time. This was the explanation given by Executive Board member André Postema last Monday to the collected SSC employees. According to Postema, director René Verspeek did not develop sufficient vision for the future of his department, despite repeated insistence from the Board. His relationship with the faculties was not good either. Verspeek denies this, but he admits that he did not want to burden his staff at the moment with new strategies because their resilience had already been tested to the limit, mainly because of the problems relating to the student tracking system MUSL.

Verspeek had wanted to stay on at SSC for a few years, to solve the problems surrounding MUSL and the sports hall properly.

The announcement last week caused despondency among SSC employees. Verspeek's successor will be Astrid Boeijen, currently head of a policy-making department under the Executive Board. A new position for Verspeek has not been found yet.
