Green tea has a preventative effect on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. But it is also a perfect drink for those who want to lose weight.
Drink three cups of green tea a day, and you will lose 1.3 kilos in three months, concludes Maastricht doctor of biomedicine Rick Hursel in his thesis. Would six cups of tea make one lose double the amount? “There is some benefit, but it is not significant. Two to three cups yield the greatest effect.”
The slimming properties of green tea have been known for some time, says Hursel. “The first studies date from the end of the nineties. The last few years, however, there has been increasing evidence that the claims are false. That's why we have carried out a meta analysis and collected data from all those studies.”
The benefits of green tea are not equal for all. “Caffeine en catechin are compounds in green tea that combine to promote the combustion of fats in the body. Someone who has been drinking large amounts of coffee or cola for years, is used to a certain amount of caffeine in his or her body, and hence the effect will be less.” It also appears that Europeans respond less well than Asians. “This probably has to do with a particular gene variation.” And adding a little milk to the tea also affects the benefits of green tea. “The proteins inhibit its effectiveness.”
