"I just love everything British"

"I just love everything British"

Hannah Saija (22) from Middelburg, the Netherlands, is a third-year student of Arts and Culture

Loves: England, British literature, dogs
The moment she’s rich enough, Hannah Saija wants to buy herself a castle. On British soil; her language skills aren’t good enough to buy one in France. But even more important is her affection towards the country. “I’m an Anglophile. I just love everything British.” Her passion started the very first time she visited London. “I can’t really explain what it is. It may have something to do with the politeness of the people and their decent accent, but also the history and culture fascinates me.” That’s also why she prefers to read English literature. “Jane Austen is one of my favourite writers, but I also really like the tale of Robin Hood. He’s my ideal good-bad-guy.” To make her fairytale complete, she wants to share her castle with a dog. “Unfortunately I can’t have one right now. My future dog has to be playful and not too small. Maybe a Labrador.”

Hates: train delays, prejudice
Saija’s parents live in Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland. “A really nice place to be, but the train trip I have to make to get there is a nightmare! I have to change three times and it takes over three hours. That’s if I’m lucky. Because of my OV card, I have to travel on weekends. Unfortunately, the NS is often working on the tracks then, which means I have to take the bus. So annoying!” Saija also hates prejudice. “People often think I’m a foreigner. It’s not that I blame them: I don’t exactly look Dutch. Many find it hard to figure out my background. They mostly think I’m from South America, which I find funny. Actually, my father is from the Moluccas. But despite that, I’m European in heart and soul.”
