“Tonight we want to celebrate the continent of Africa”, says Shaun Matsheza, one of the organisers of the UCM Africa Day, to the very crowded common room. “Africa is not only the continent of troubles.”
Africa Day is the annual commemoration on 25 May of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Ethiopia. The event at UCM was organised by a group of students either from Africa or with an attachment to Africa.
Before the celebration starts, the serious part of the evening takes place; two short lectures on irregular migration from West Africa to Europe and the relationship between the European Union and Africa. After that it’s time “to feel the rhythm”, as Matsheza puts it, and to join the workshops on African dancing or singing or to taste a bite of the African buffet.
