“The person I miss the most, now that I live here in Maastricht, is – besides my family – my best friend Zoë. We’ve been friends since we were ten years old – we shared a love of Harry Potter books. She’s the kind of person you call in a crisis. It can be the middle of the night, but she’ll be there at your door with a cup of tea. We also love the same TV shows; I miss watching them together.
“A more random person I miss is a lady I always met at the bus stop on my way to school. We never spoke; I don’t even know her name. But she was just always there and we shared an umbrella when it rained. She’s probably wondering where I am now – I would if she suddenly disappeared.
Sweet and naïve
“I also miss my niece and nephew of five and three years old. I cherish the photo in which we’re all sitting at the dinner table. It’s a memory of a great day when we were all really happy. They’re really young and sweet and naïve. Here in Maastricht I mostly interact with students and I miss the way small children look at the world.”
Sweet Home Alabama is a new series in which international students talk about people they miss and the things they’ve brought with them
