Pressure from the universities (including Maastricht University) and schools of higher professional education has resulted in Minister Leers postponing the fee increase for non-EU students until 1 September. The legal action taken by VSNU and the HBO Council has been called off.
Minister Leers had raised fees considerably, with effect from 1 July, resulting in a large group of foreign students being confronted with an unexpected cost increase. By delaying the introduction with two months, the majority of them will not need to pay the increase.
Future fee increases will be introduced in co-operation with the universities and schools of higher professional education. Their sector associations are pleased with the result but are still of the opinion that fee increases contrast sharply with the cabinet’s ambitions to get the Netherlands back to the world top five knowledge economies.
