Looking hungry

Alison in Wonderland

When tuition fees are hiked up here and people start to fret about affordability, it always takes me back to my undergrad days in Sydney. Tuition fees there run into the tens of thousands of dollars and my university used to offer a free breakfast to poor students. ‘Poor’ seemed to be defined as anyone who showed up early enough, looking hungry enough. Which was just about everyone I knew. Lunch was two slices of bread and a scraping of jam. Then for dinner, you’d buy a 50 cent portion of rice and drown it in soy sauce. Nearly ten years have since passed, but those days left their mark. I still can’t throw leftover rice out, but I’ll never be able to touch soy sauce again.
