From 1 December, foreign students commuting to Maastricht every day may (again) use a permit to park in the neighbourhoods around the city centre. This was decided by the Maastricht city council last Tuesday.
The trial project – in which 97 students participated – finished at the end of July 2011. The mayor and alderman of the city decided at that time to replace the trial with a permanent regulation. Implementation took a few months. In the meantime, no permits were issued.
The parking permits, which cost 5 euros per month (residents pay 3.50), applies in the Brusselsepoort, Mariaberg, Villapark and Noorderbrug districts. About a hundred students have already applied for a permit. They can expect their cards at the beginning of December, said Jo Haesen, responsible within the UM for the student parking project.
